When MSF realised it was the “international community” all along

In this Humanitarian Alternatives article, Michiel Hofman argues that although Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is financially independent from the United States, it has abruptly discovered its autonomy is merely an illusion. Drastic cuts in US aid have revealed systemic interdependence, from vaccines to humanitarian flights and health staff. The organisation has now realised it has been an integral part of a system it has legitimately criticised for decades. This creates a dilemma for MSF’s traditional calls to action: asking others in the ‘international community’ to do more when they are cutting aid and disengaging from international solidarity. Through an aid system that is now questioned by the global south as being exclusive of their voices as well as ineffective.
